Home Care in Blackheath
Personal care, live-in care and nail care at home across Blackheath Village, Westcombe Park, Vanbrugh Park, Kidbrooke and the Greenwich side of the heath.
Big houses, long residencies
Blackheath has an unusually settled older population. People buy here and stay, often for forty or fifty years, and the housing stock reflects it: Georgian and Victorian houses around the heath and the village, the Cator Estate, the Paragon, and the post-war Span estates towards Kidbrooke.
These are lovely houses to grow old in and difficult houses to grow frail in. Three storeys, steep original staircases, bathrooms that were never designed for a walk-in shower, and gardens that become too much some years before anyone admits it.
Why live-in care suits Blackheath
Because the houses are large, live-in care is straightforward to arrange here. There is nearly always a spare bedroom, which is the practical requirement. For a couple where one partner has become unwell, a single live-in carer supporting both people in their own home is usually far less disruptive, and often less expensive, than two care home placements.
The alternative pattern we see a lot is a package of visits building up gradually: an hour in the morning for washing and dressing, a midday call, and someone in the evening. Both work. Which one is right depends on how much of the day is difficult, and that is what the assessment is for.
The heath is worth using. One of the genuine advantages of caring for someone here is that there is somewhere to go. A slow walk across to the village, a coffee, and back is a real outing, and it is the sort of thing a companionship visit is for. Care that consists only of tasks in a house is a poorer kind of care.
What we provide in Blackheath
Questions families in Blackheath ask
Which parts of Blackheath do you cover?
Blackheath Village, Blackheath Standard, Westcombe Park, Vanbrugh Park, the Cator Estate, Kidbrooke and across towards Greenwich and Lee. Blackheath straddles the Lewisham and Greenwich boundary and we work on both sides of it.
My parents live in a three-storey house. Is that a problem?
No, but it does shape the plan. Often the answer is to reorganise the ground floor so the essentials are on one level, and we will talk that through at the assessment along with equipment, stairlifts and what the occupational therapist can arrange.
Can you support a couple where only one of them needs care?
Yes, and it is one of the things we do most. One live-in carer can provide full personal care for one partner and lighter practical support for the other.
Do you do nail care in Blackheath?
Yes. Blackheath is within our nail care area, at home or in a nursing home.
